Share – Options For Watching Live TV

First Step…

Great! You’ve finally decided to cut the cord, get rid of your cable company, and save yourself some money. That was the easy part. Now you’ll need to figure out the best options for watching your favorite channels and tv shows.

Streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Starz, and Hulu are all great options for streaming some of the most popular movies and TV shows available on-demand. However, they don’t offer any live broadcast. So, if watching live tv is a must, then you’ll need to select one of the following:

Subscription-Based Cable Alternatives

While all of the subscription-based services will have some basic similarities, they are not identical. Each provider offers different features and benefits which makes their service plans unique.

Import Things To Remember:

  • Make sure that you check to see if the service provider offers the channels that are most important to you and your family. Either as part of a package or as an add-on.
  • Check to see if they offer local channels and if so, which local channels will you will get.
  • Figure out which devices you’ll use to stream your content (streaming device, computer, smartphone, etc)
  • Think about how many devices you’ll need to be able to stream content on simultaneously. This is important especially in households where you have multiple TV’s being watched at the exact same time.
  • Do you want to schedule and record a live broadcast? If so, then you’ll need to find out if the plan provider offers a cloud DVR service that will allow you to record live programming and watch at a later time.
  • If you plan on watching TV on the go then you need to make sure that your favorite channels app works with your subscription service. For example, Let’s say you sign up for service with Vidgo. Then you install the ESPN app on your smartphone. You can now log-in to the ESPN app using your Vidgo log-in information and watch ESPN on your mobile device at home or on the go.

HD Antenna

Another option for watching live tv that you may want to consider is getting an HD antenna. This is by far the least expensive and easiest way to watch live tv including local news, weather, and sports. Many cord-cutters chose this option because the only out of pocket expense is the upfront purchase of the antenna.

Many of the major network affiliates like ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, PBS, and more still broadcast their live programming over-the-air (OTA). If you have an antenna and you are within range, you can pick up the signal and watch the live broadcast for free.

  • Antennas are cheap (Starting around $10)
  • No internet needed
  • Free! No monthly fees
  • Easy setup
  • No installation Fees (In most cases)

  • Limited or no channels available in certain areas
  • Poor reception occasionally

But, before you run out and buy an HD antenna, click this link to visit The Antennas Direct Transmitter Locator Tool. You can also visit or TV Fool to see how many FREE over-the-air channels are available in your area. Just enter your address or ZIP Code below to find how many channels you can receive using an antenna.
